Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MRSA is a bacterium that commonly causes skin infection s. Bacteria that normally live on the skin surface may also get inside these clogged areas but not always. MRSA skin infection, on the other hand, is a serious form of Staph infection that develops on the skin and can cause deeper problems in the body.
Staph pronounced staff is short for Staphylococcus. Staph is a type of germ bacteria that can cause infections almost anywhere in the body. One type of staph germ, called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MRSAis harder to treat.
Staphylococcus referred to as staph is a group of bacteria commonly carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people. Although there are 40 types, the most common one is staphylococcus aureus. Staph generally causes no problems or illness. Staph is one of the most common causes of skin infections and can cause serious wound infections.
Certain bacteria commonly live on the skin of many people without causing harm. However, these bacteria can cause skin infections if they enter the body through cuts, open wounds, or other breaks in the skin. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, pain, or pus.

Staph is the shortened name for Staphylococcus staf-uh-low-KAH-kusa type of bacteria. These bacteria live harmlessly on many skin surfaces, especially around the nose, mouth, genitals, and anus. But if the skin is punctured or broken, staph bacteria can enter the wound and cause an infection.
Staphylococcus aureus is the most dangerous of all of the many common staphylococcal bacteria. These gram-positivesphere-shaped coccal bacteria see figure How Bacteria Shape Up often cause skin infections but can cause pneumonia, heart valve infections, and bone infections. These bacteria are spread by having direct contact with an infected person, by using a contaminated object, or by inhaling infected droplets dispersed by sneezing or coughing. Skin infections are common, but the bacteria can spread through the bloodstream and infect distant organs.
Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is a reaction to a staphylococcal skin infection in which the skin blisters and peels off as though burned. See also Overview of Bacterial Skin Infections. Certain types of staphylococci bacteria secrete toxic substances that cause the top layer of the epidermis to split from the rest of the skin.
